Getting there

Before you can start discovering the area, the first thing to think about is how you are going to get there.

If you’re travelling by plane, Denver International Airport (DEN) is your closest point of entry. Known for the iconic white peaks soaring up from its roof toward the sky, reminiscent of Colorado’s snowcapped mountaintops, this airport is the largest in the US. Thankfully, it’s not the busiest. In fact, it’s surprisingly easy to navigate and even has free Wi-Fi access. This is especially helpful for international travellers who don’t have a data plan in the US.

If you’re visiting Colorado from abroad, there are some things you need to take care of before you leave home and set off to the Wild West. Most importantly, it is absolutely essential that you take the necessary steps to get the appropriate travel authorisation before you go. US Immigration officers are not known for their leniency, so take care to follow all paperwork requirements to the letter so you can make it through airport security and get on with your trip.

The documents you need depends on your nationality. While citizens of some countries need a visa to visit the US, there is a visa waiver program available for around 35 countries, including Australia, European Union member states, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. This program is called ESTA. You can learn more about it and apply for your ESTA online at www.byevisa.com

In a nutshell, this type of travel authorisation allows you to visit the United States for up to 90 days at a time. This should give you plenty of time to explore, but if you fall in love and want to come back, you’re in luck. Your ESTA document is valid for two years, so you can use it to visit again and again.

Those who are not eligible for the waiver program will have to get a visa through a US embassy or consulate. This may be a lengthy process, so be sure to plan far in advance.

On arrival, US Customs and Border Control officials will examine your passport and check your other required documents to make sure everything is in order. Visa policies are strictly enforced, so if you do not have the appropriate paperwork when you arrive, you will not be permitted to enter the country.

In the classic American way, many people choose to visit Colorado Springs as part of a road trip. If you’re driving into town, remember to keep your eyes on the road! The spectacular views can be distracting, but it’s best to find a safe spot to park so you can fully take in the natural beauty that surrounds you.
